Mark Sanders is an international speaker in the addictions field whose presentations have reached thousands throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada and the Caribbean Islands. Mark has taught at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, Illinois State University School of Social Work, Loyola University of Chicago School of Social Work and Adler Institute of Psychology. Mark was the director of the first Southeast Asian and refugee addiction counselor training program in the world, he has authored several books and workbooks geared toward client recovery; he is a successful consultant, regularly providing consultation to Ohio Department of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, WA AODA and Michigan Bureau of Mental Health. Mark received the Professional of the Year Award for his work as a trainer and consultant in the addiction field in Illinois.
Workshop Content
The field of addictions treatment is ever evolving. The clinical supervisor is in an excellent position to move the field forward by helping counselors develop necessary skills to be effective in an ever-evolving climate. Participants will leave this interactive, two-day, skill-building workshop with tools that will enable them to help build counselor skills.

- The Clinical Supervisor as leader, mentor and coach.
- Stages of Counselor Development and the Role of the Supervisor.
- The Clinical Supervisor as Rapport Builder.
- Creative Methods of Clinical Supervision.
- Evaluating Yourself as a Supervisor and a Leader.
Issues of Diversity in Clinical Supervision and Effective Delegation in Clinical Supervision.
What will you achieve from this workshop?
- Be able to have a working definition of clinical supervision.
- Be more aware of the role of the clinical supervisor as leader, mentor and coach.
- Awareness of five strategies for helping counselors adjust to change and adopt evidence-based practices.
- Awareness of five steps for developing team cohesion.
- 16 credits toward certification and re-certification.

The 2007 Annual WAAODA Conference features an impressive lineup of renown speakers from national organizations: Dr. Wilson Compton from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) will be a key note speaker at the Plenary session on Monday, Dr. Barbara Mason from the Scripps Research Institute will be doing a workshop on Tuesday entitled “An Evidence-Based Clinician's Guide to the New Pharmacotherapies for Alcoholism”, and Shawn Shea, MD of the Training Institute for Suicide Assessment and Clinical Interviewing, will be the key note speaker at the Plenary session on Wednesday. Dr. Steven Andrew of Inner Edge will be returning by popular demand to present “The Heart of the Matter”.
Outstanding local presenters include Dr. Michael Miller, President – Elect of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), Drs. Michael Bohn, Lance Longo and Paul Zenisek from Aurora Health and Dr. Theodore Weltzin, Mickey Gabbert, Tom Schiltz and Karin Beal from Rogers Memorial Hospital. We are excited to have Bob Carty from GLATTC back to present "Diversity Issues in Clinical Supervision".
Susan Crowley of University Health Services and WAAODA Board Member will be conducting a training entitled "Utilizing Public Policy to Impact Substance Abuse in Wisconsin". Chief Noble Wray of the Madison Police Department and WAAODA Board Member and Joel Plant, the newly appointed Alcohol Policy Coordinator for Dane County will also be presenting on Criminal Justice and Partnering for Success.
